Last night was a big night for the Minnesota Rink Rats as the team won their first playoff game in franchise history against the top ranked Las Vegas Bulls. Minnesota jumped on the Bulls early starting the game with a 4-0 lead in the first period. Las Vegas scored a late goal going into the second period but the lead proved to be too much as the Rink Rats knocked in a couple second period goals and won 7-2.
“Tonight was a big win for us,” stated Head Coach Barry Melrose. “Historically, we’ve had a tough time beating these guys and we’re not considered a big road threat. Everyone played hard and you could tell our guys were fired up. There are some things we could improve on from tonight’s game, namely our penalty minutes which I think was evidence of how fired up we were, but overall I’m really pleased with how well we played.”
The Rink Rats seemed to have more confidence on the ice after being swept by the Edmonton Express in last year’s playoffs. “The playoffs are a different beast,” stated Captain Jay Bouwmeester. “We’re a young team and we learned a lot in last season’s playoffs. We all believe we have a shot and we just need to continue to work hard and play our best hockey. Hopefully we’ll continue to get a few bounces as well.”
The Rink Rats will take on the Bulls one more time in Las Vegas before returning back to Minneapolis. Hopefully the Rats can pull off another upset
before heading back to Minneapolis.
